⚡ QUICK ANSWER

What is the best travel insurance for seniors visiting Thailand?

It depends on your age bracket. At 60–69, SafetyWing Essential — 60–69 bracket, ≈ $218/month, medical limit $100,000 from 65 — and Genki Traveler (up to 69, full €1,000,000 limit) are the two direct options. At 70–74, the one direct travel plan is IMG Patriot International, with reduced limits and no acute-onset cover of pre-existing conditions. From 75, there is no direct plan: your file is matched individually with a partner broker.

Ages 60–64 → SafetyWing Essential (≈ $218/month, $250,000 limit) then Genki Traveler (from €52/month, €1,000,000). SafetyWing Complete still open to new sign-ups until 64.

Ages 65–69 → SafetyWing Essential (limit reduced to $100,000) and Genki Traveler (€1,000,000 to age 69). Both stop taking new members after 69.

Ages 70–74 → IMG Patriot International — the direct option at 70–74: medical maximum reduced from 70, no acute-onset cover of pre-existing conditions. Price on quote.

Ages 75+ → No direct plan — broker file, matched case by case. Send us your age, conditions and dates.

Straight answer, by age: up to 64, both mainstream travel plans accept you — SafetyWing Essential ($250,000 medical; ≈$218/month in the 60–69 bracket, the $62.72/4-week headline being the 10–39 rate) and Genki Traveler (€1,000,000 medical, from €52/month, age-based). At 65–69, both still accept you, but SafetyWing’s Essential limit drops to $100,000 while Genki keeps €1,000,000 up to age 69. At 70–74, the direct travel plans are down to one — IMG Patriot International, with reduced limits and no acute-onset cover of pre-existing conditions. From 75, there is no direct plan: files are individually brokered. Thailand itself has no age limit; the insurance market does.

The travel insurance industry was not designed with you in mind. Most policies are built for 25-year-olds backpacking through hostels; age caps, premium loadings and pre-existing condition exclusions can make finding cover feel impossible. It is not — but the search has to start from your age bracket, not from a price comparison site.

Every product figure on this page comes from the insurers’ official pages, checked on 5 September 2026, and from our verified data on IMG Patriot. Where a figure is not published — evacuation sub-limits, the price of a plan that quotes on your age and history — we say so and point you to the policy wording or a quote instead of printing a guess. Aged 60–69 and hesitating between the two big travel plans? We compare the two plans side by side — including the medical-limit reduction that hits at 65. Staying in Thailand rather than visiting? Read the health insurance over 60 guide instead: annual health cover follows different rules.

Aged 60–69? The two mainstream plans in this guide still accept you — you can get a quote directly:

70 or older? Your options are different — see the 70–74 section or send us your file for a free check.

THE REALITY

Why is travel insurance different after 60?

Three things change at once. Insurers price age bands, so the same plan costs more at every step — SafetyWing Essential goes from $62.72 per 4 weeks at 10–39 to about $218 a month at 60–69. Entry ages close doors: the two mainstream travel plans stop taking new members after 69. And pre-existing conditions, which most people have something of by 60, are excluded by travel-medical plans at any age. Thailand adds its own factors:

Heat

A hot, humid climate is harder on older bodies and on anyone taking blood-pressure medication. Dehydration and heat exhaustion are the routine emergencies.

Falls

Steep temple stairs, uneven pavements, wet surfaces in the rainy season. Falls are the injury we hear about most from travellers over 60.

Pre-existing conditions

Hypertension, diabetes, cardiac history — the conditions travel stress and heat aggravate are exactly the ones travel plans exclude.

Where the hospitals are

Thailand has 62 JCI-accredited hospitals, concentrated in Bangkok and the main cities. A cardiac emergency on an island usually means a transfer first — which is what the evacuation clause is for.

THE COMPLETE BREAKDOWN

Best travel insurance for seniors in Thailand: age limits by insurer

This is the table every senior traveller needs before comparing a single price. For the three plans we can name with verified conditions, the limits come from the official product pages; for the others, age limits and conditions are on quote.

💡 Key insight: the mainstream travel insurance market stops at 69. At 70–74 one direct plan remains, with reduced limits; from 75 the honest route is an individually brokered file, not a price table. If you are 65–69 and planning to keep travelling, the smartest move is to sort your longer-term cover now — see health insurance over 60.

AGES 60–69

What are your options at 60–69?

Thailand travel insurance seniors - active traveler in their 60s

Good news: you are in the last bracket where both direct travel plans accept you. Affordable travel insurance for seniors still exists here — with one deadline at 64 and one fine-print change at 65 that most people miss.

SafetyWing Essential (60–69 bracket)

≈ $218/month in the 60–69 bracket (the $62.72 headline is the 10–39 rate), billed per 4 weeks, cancel anytime, buy while already in Thailand. $250,000 medical limit, $0 deductible for non-US residents, home-country cover 30 days per 90. One child under 10 free per adult — useful if the grandchildren travel with you.

⚠️ At 65–69: the medical limit falls to $100,000. Motorbikes only with a valid motorcycle licence and a helmet.

Genki Traveler (up to age 69)

€1,000,000 medical limit at every eligible age, €50 deductible per case (€0 if hospitalised), policies of 1 to 12 months, from €52/month rising with age, deductible and the USA/Canada option. Can be bought while already in Thailand, with a 14-day waiting period for emergencies if you had no prior insurance.

✓ At 65–69: the full €1,000,000 limit is kept — ten times SafetyWing Essential’s at this age.

60–64: the closing window

SafetyWing Complete ($1,500,000 limit, from $177.50/month at 18–39, 12-month minimum) accepts new members until 64 only and is then renewable indefinitely. If you want a high-limit plan that will still be yours at 75, the sign-up happens in this bracket. Otherwise, for a holiday of a few weeks, SafetyWing Essential first — one 4-week cycle usually covers the trip — and Genki Traveler for a longer stay.

65–69: read the limits

Two changes at 65: Complete is closed to new sign-ups, and Essential’s medical limit drops to $100,000. Genki keeps €1,000,000 until 69. For a two-month trip at 67, that is the number that matters in a Thai intensive-care unit, and it is why Genki is the direct pick in this bracket for anyone who wants the higher limit. Neither plan covers pre-existing conditions, at any age. Line by line: SafetyWing vs Genki.

💡 Strategic advice for 65–69

Nothing in the direct travel catalogue accepts new members after 69. If you expect to keep travelling — or to settle in Thailand — use this bracket to arrange the longer-term cover, because at 70 the choice becomes a single travel plan with reduced limits, and at 75 a brokered file. Annual health insurance over 60 explains the routes.

AGES 70–74

What are your options at 70–74?

This is where things get real, and where most seniors insurance pages go vague. SafetyWing and Genki no longer accept new members. One direct travel plan remains, and we name it with its limits rather than around them.

IMG Patriot International — the direct option at 70–74

A travel medical plan for non-US travellers (Lite or Platinum), sold for 5 days to 12 months and renewable. Read the age rules before you buy: from age 70 the medical maximum is reduced to $100,000 on Platinum and $50,000–$100,000 on Lite; “acute onset” of pre-existing conditions is covered only under 70, so at 70+ there is no acute-onset cover at all; the sports rider is available up to 65 only. The exact Lite/Platinum thresholds are confirmed on the product page at purchase; anything not listed here is per the policy wording.

We propose IMG Patriot directly at 70–74 only, because that is the bracket where sign-up and limits are verified. The link is in the title above and in the tables — or send us your file and we check it against the alternatives.

Health insurance thailand over 70: the annual route

If you are spending months in Thailand rather than weeks, the question is no longer travel insurance. IMG Global Medical Insurance takes applications up to 74 (cover ends at 75, medical underwriting), and other annual insurers quote case by case — see health insurance over 60 and the health insurance Thailand guide.

Other insurers at 70–74

Battleface, Pacific Cross and Cigna Global are sometimes cited for this bracket. They have no partnership with this site and publish no flat age rule we have verified: age limits and conditions on quote — quote via the contact form. UK residents: specialist insurers exist — quote via the contact form.

AGES 75 AND OVER

Over 75: what really remains?

We are explicit about this because most “seniors insurance” pages are not: at 75 and over, there is no travel plan in our catalogue that we can sell you directly. SafetyWing and Genki close at 69; IMG Patriot is proposed here at 70–74 only, the bracket where we have verified sign-up and limits. Beyond that, we do not point you to an affiliate link.

What we do instead is match the file individually with a partner broker. Insurers that accept older applicants exist — including, for UK residents, specialist senior insurers — and their acceptance, exclusions and price depend entirely on your medical history, nationality and trip length. We do not print their age limits or prices because we have not verified them: age limits and conditions on quote.

What to send us for a 75+ file

  • Your age and nationality (UK residents have specialist options the rest of us do not).
  • Trip dates, destinations in Thailand (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, the islands) and whether you travel elsewhere on the same trip.
  • Every diagnosed condition and every daily medication — an exclusion is better than a voided policy.
  • Whether you need trip cancellation on top of medical cover.

⚠️ What does not work at 75+ and 80+

SafetyWing (to 69), Genki Traveler (to 69), IMG Patriot as proposed here (70–74), and standard policies from travel agents and credit cards. Do not waste weeks on quote forms that will refuse you — go straight to the broker file.

CRITICAL INFORMATION

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Senior traveler consulting about medications and pre-existing conditions

This is the question that keeps senior travellers up at night, and the answer for the products on this page is short: not by the direct travel plans. Here is what each named product does, according to its official positioning; the general mechanics — look-back periods, declarations, exclusions versus loadings — are in our pre-existing conditions insurance guide.

ProductPre-existing conditionsWhat that means for you
SafetyWing Essential / CompleteNot covered. New and unexpected problems remain covered under the policy terms.Fine for a controlled condition you do not expect to flare; useless for treatment of that condition.
Genki TravelerNot covered.Same logic: unrelated emergencies yes, the declared condition no.
IMG Patriot International (70–74)“Acute onset” of a pre-existing condition is covered only under 70. At 70 and over: no acute-onset cover. In the 70–74 bracket, plan on paying for anything linked to a known condition.
IMG Global Medical (annual health plan)Medical underwriting: acceptance not guaranteed; the card is charged only after underwriting. Applications to 74, cover ends at 75 unless enrolled before 65 with continuous cover. The route for long stays with a stable history, decided file by file.
Brokered annual and specialist plans (75+, complex files)Underwriting per insurer: exclusion, moratorium or cover at a loaded premium — terms in the policy wording.Only known after full disclosure; this is what the broker file establishes.

SafetyWing, Genki and IMG positions from the official product pages and our verified data. Waiting periods, loadings and moratorium lengths of annual insurers are not published as flat figures — per the policy wording.

The look-back period

Insurers define a pre-existing condition as anything diagnosed, treated or symptomatic within a period before the policy starts, set in each wording. A blood-pressure prescription renewed last month counts. This is why “I feel fine” is not a declaration — the medical file is.

🚨 CRITICAL: never omit a condition

Failing to declare a pre-existing condition does not just void that specific cover — it can invalidate your entire policy. Insurers investigate claims and medical records exist. An exclusion you know about is better than a policy that evaporates in the emergency room. Always declare.

THE NUMBERS

How much does senior travel insurance for Thailand cost?

Affordable travel insurance for seniors exists up to 69, and its price is public. Above that, every price depends on your age, history and the plan matched — so this table has two kinds of cells: verified figures, and “on quote”. Nothing invented in between.

Age bracketVerified priceMedical limitRoute on this site
60–64SafetyWing Essential ≈ $218/month (60–69 bracket); Genki Traveler from €52/month (age-based)SafetyWing $250,000; Genki €1,000,000SafetyWing first, Genki second; Complete sign-up until 64
65–69SafetyWing Essential ≈ $218/month; Genki Traveler from €52/month (age-based)SafetyWing $100,000 at 65–69; Genki €1,000,000SafetyWing Essential, Genki (both stop at 69)
70–74IMG Patriot International: on quote (5 days to 12 months)Reduced from 70: $100,000 (Platinum) / $50,000–$100,000 (Lite)IMG Patriot, or your file checked by a broker
75+No direct plan — on quote via the contact formDepends on the insurer matchedBroker route only

Only the figures above are verified against official product pages (SafetyWing: $62.72 per 4 weeks at 10–39, about $218/month at 60–69, $0 deductible for non-US residents, billed per 4 weeks — 13 cycles a year; Genki: from €52/month, €50 deductible per case, €0 if hospitalised), checked on 5 September 2026. Everything else is on quote — we do not publish price ranges we have not verified.

💰 The arithmetic that matters

At 60–69, one SafetyWing Essential cycle (4 weeks) at about $218 covers a typical holiday; a two-month stay is two or three cycles, since 4 weeks is not a calendar month. Genki prices the whole stay in one policy at your age-based rate. Compare that with paying a private hospital yourself: prices are set by each hospital and a serious admission runs to five figures in dollars — our healthcare cost guide shows how the bills are built.

💡 What lowers a quote at any age

A higher deductible; medical-only cover instead of a package with cancellation; a shorter, exact trip length rather than an annual policy you will not use; and, above 69, applying with the complete medical file on day one — the broker cannot negotiate a loading on a condition that appears later. Percentages vary by insurer and are not published as flat figures, so we do not print them.

WHY IT MATTERS MORE FOR SENIORS

Is medical evacuation included?

Usually yes — but three different things hide behind the word, and at 70+ you want all three spelled out in the policy wording before you buy. Bangkok has excellent hospitals; a cardiac or orthopaedic emergency in Koh Lanta or Pai usually means a transfer first and treatment second.

1. Emergency evacuation

Transport to the nearest facility that can treat you — island to Bangkok, or Thailand to Singapore. The insurer chooses destination and means; a self-arranged air ambulance is the classic way to end up with an unpaid invoice.

2. Repatriation

Flying you home once stable, sometimes with a medical escort. Check whether it is a separate benefit, at whose discretion, and what happens to the return ticket you hold.

3. Repatriation of remains

The clause nobody reads and every family needs. Confirm it exists and whether it has its own limit.

What the named plans say — and what they do not publish

We do not print evacuation sub-limits for SafetyWing, Genki or IMG Patriot, because those figures are not in our verified data: they are per the policy wording. Ask the insurer for the evacuation and repatriation amounts in writing and keep them with your policy. What is verified is the cover once you are home — and neither plan replaces your national health cover after the trip, so plan the handover with your doctor before departure.

⚠️ Check the evacuation figure specifically

“Medical limit” and “evacuation limit” are different lines in every wording. At 65–69, SafetyWing Essential’s medical limit is $100,000 — read what the evacuation benefit adds or does not add to it before you rely on it for an island trip. If you want us to read a wording for you, send it through the contact form.

BEFORE YOU BUY

What should seniors check before buying travel insurance for Thailand?

Buying travel insurance as a senior needs more care than picking the first result. Five steps, three Thailand-specific points, and the mistakes we see in our inbox.

1

Know your health file

List every medication, every condition treated in the last two years and any upcoming appointment. You will need it for the declaration — and the broker needs it on day one.

2

Check the age rule before the price

Do not fill quote forms that will refuse you. Aged 60–69: SafetyWing or Genki Traveler quote in minutes. 70–74: IMG Patriot, limits read first. 75+: send us your file.

3

Compare like for like

Medical limit, evacuation benefit, pre-existing handling, deductible, trip length. A $100,000 plan and a €1,000,000 plan are not the same product at a different price.

4

Read the exclusions and the age clauses

Pre-existing definitions, alcohol, adventure activities, and the age-specific reductions — the $100,000 at 65–69 on SafetyWing Essential, the reduced maximum from 70 on IMG Patriot.

5

Declare everything, then buy early

Medical screening and broker matching take time. Buy weeks before departure, not days — and carry the policy number and the 24/7 line on paper as well as on your phone.

Thailand-specific points for senior travellers

☀️ Heat and terrain

Hot and humid most of the year; dehydration and heat exhaustion are genuine risks, especially on blood-pressure medication. Temple complexes mean steep stairs and uneven ground, and the rainy season makes surfaces slippery. Pace yourself, hydrate, avoid the midday sun, and prefer the cooler months if you can.

🏍️ Motorbikes: a strong warning

We advise seniors against renting or riding motorbikes in Thailand: Thailand is among the countries with the highest road-death rates in the world (WHO Global Health Observatory), traffic is demanding even for experienced riders, and riding without a valid licence is illegal and the classic reason a claim is refused. If you do ride: SafetyWing covers riding only with a valid motorcycle licence and a helmet, and publishes no engine-size limits; with Genki Traveler, motor vehicle use covered with conditions — check the policy wording. Read our motorbike insurance guide.

💊 Medications and hospitals

Bring enough of every prescription in its original packaging plus copies of the prescriptions; some medicines are restricted or unavailable in Thailand. Bangkok has world-class hospitals with international patient departments; quality varies outside the main cities, so know where the nearest good hospital is from your accommodation.

Common mistakes we see

❌ Assuming credit card cover is enough

Card policies typically carry age caps, low medical limits and no pre-existing cover, and only apply if you paid the trip with the card. Read the wording against the table above.

❌ Buying the cheapest policy

Budget policies carry the most exclusions. The saving upfront is the hospital bill later.

❌ Ignoring the evacuation line

Check the evacuation benefit specifically, not just the medical limit.

❌ Waiting until the last minute

Screening and brokered files take days to weeks.

❌ Not carrying the documents

Policy number, emergency line, cover summary — on paper and on the phone. Admissions staff ask for them.

Travelling with a younger spouse or with the family?

Each traveller is priced on their own age: at 65 and 72, one of you is still in the direct catalogue and the other is not — compare two individual policies against a couple’s policy. Grandchildren under 10 travel free on SafetyWing Essential, one per adult; the wider family case is in our family travel insurance guide. Visa questions — O-A retirement visa insurance, long stays — are on the visa insurance page, and whether you need cover at all on do I need travel insurance for Thailand.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Can I get Thailand travel insurance if I’m over 70, 75 or 80?

Yes, but the options narrow at each bracket. SafetyWing and Genki stop at 69. At 70–74 the direct option we name is IMG Patriot International, with the medical maximum reduced from age 70 ($100,000 on Platinum, $50,000–$100,000 on Lite) and no acute-onset cover of pre-existing conditions at 70+. From 75, there is no direct travel plan in our catalogue: insurers that accept older applicants exist, and we match these files individually with a partner broker — send us your age and conditions.

What is the best travel insurance for seniors going to Thailand?

It depends on your age bracket. At 60–64: SafetyWing Essential (≈ $218/month, $250,000 limit) first, Genki Traveler (€1,000,000) second, and SafetyWing Complete still open until 64. At 65–69: SafetyWing Essential’s limit falls to $100,000 while Genki keeps €1,000,000 to 69. At 70–74: IMG Patriot International, limits read first. At 75+: a brokered file. No insurer pays us for a ranking; the routing follows the verified age rules.

How much does senior travel insurance for Thailand cost?

The verified figures: SafetyWing Essential is $62.72 per 4 weeks at ages 10–39 and about $218 per month in the 60–69 bracket, with a $0 deductible for non-US residents; Genki Traveler starts from €52 per month (age-based) with a €50 deductible per case (€0 if hospitalised). IMG Patriot at 70–74 is on quote. Above 74, the price depends on the insurer matched to your file — we do not publish ranges we have not verified.

Are pre-existing conditions covered by senior travel insurance?

Not by SafetyWing or Genki Traveler, at any age: new and unexpected problems are covered, the declared condition is not. IMG Patriot covers “acute onset” of a pre-existing condition only under 70 — none at 70+. Annual and specialist insurers underwrite each case and answer with an exclusion, a moratorium or a loaded premium, known only after full disclosure. See our pre-existing conditions guide.

Is medical evacuation included in senior travel insurance?

Usually, but as three separate benefits — emergency evacuation to the nearest adequate hospital, repatriation home once stable, and repatriation of remains — each with its own conditions. The evacuation sub-limits of SafetyWing, Genki and IMG Patriot are not in our verified data, so we do not print them: ask the insurer for the figures in writing. Once home, SafetyWing Essential covers 30 days per 90 days of insurance in your home country (15 for US residents); Genki covers home-country emergencies for six weeks per stay.

Do I need to declare all my health conditions?

Yes. Non-disclosure can void your entire policy, not just the cover for that condition. If you are unsure whether something qualifies, declare it anyway — insurers investigate claims and medical records exist. An exclusion you know about is better than a policy that fails in the emergency room.

What is the maximum trip length for seniors?

SafetyWing Essential renews in 4-week cycles with no end date needed; Genki Traveler runs 1 to 12 months in one policy; IMG Patriot International is sold for 5 days to 12 months and is renewable. Single-trip policies from other insurers set their own maximum, on quote. Beyond a year, or if you are settling in Thailand, you need annual health insurance — see health insurance over 60.

Does travel insurance cover motorbikes for seniors in Thailand?

Only under conditions, and we advise against riding. SafetyWing covers riding only with a valid motorcycle licence and a helmet and publishes no engine-size limits; with Genki Traveler, riding is covered only under the conditions set out in its policy wording; IMG Patriot’s sports rider stops at 65. Riding without a licence is illegal in Thailand and the classic reason a claim is refused.

Should I get travel insurance or expat health insurance?

For a trip of weeks to a few months: travel insurance, following the age routing on this page. For a stay of many months, repeated long stays, or retirement in Thailand — including the O-A visa, which requires USD 100,000 / 3,000,000 THB of cover since 1 October 2021 — you need annual health insurance: see the health insurance Thailand guide and visa insurance requirements.

Can my adult children buy insurance for me?

Generally yes: the adult child can manage the purchase and payment, but the traveller must complete the medical declaration personally and accurately, and the policy is in the traveller’s name. For a brokered 75+ file, the same applies — the medical information has to come from the person travelling.
