⚡ QUICK ANSWER

What’s the best scuba diving insurance for Thailand?

SafetyWing Complete (from $177.50/month, ages 18-39) covers diving through its Adventure Sports cover, included in Complete and available as a paid add-on on Essential ($62.72 per 4 weeks). Genki Traveler (from €52/month, age-based) lists diving among its included sports. Neither publishes a metre limit — the depth rule is in the policy wording, so ask in writing. DAN Europe is dive-accident cover you add on top: chamber, dive physicians, dive evacuation — it is not travel insurance. Standard travel policies usually exclude diving.

🥇 SafetyWing Complete — travel medical + diving
from $177.50/month (18-39) • $1.5M medical • Adventure Sports included ($100,000 lifetime cap) • also: Essential $62.72/4 wk + paid add-on

📊 KEY FACTS: SCUBA DIVING INSURANCE THAILAND (2026)

Depth limit? Neither SafetyWing nor Genki publishes a metre limit. Cover is “per the policy wording”: ask the insurer in writing whether your certification depth is covered.

Hyperbaric chamber cost? A single session at a private facility is an order of magnitude of $1,500–5,000 (2026); DCS usually needs several sessions. Island-to-chamber evacuation is priced by aircraft and distance. See our healthcare costs guide.

Standard travel insurance? Usually excludes scuba diving or caps it at shallow depths. SafetyWing Essential excludes diving without the Adventure Sports add-on.

Chambers in Thailand? Three facilities we can document: Bangkok (Naval Medical Department), Sattahip near Pattaya (Apakorn Kiatiwong Naval Hospital), Phuket (SSS Network). Dive centres on Koh Tao also refer to a Koh Samui facility — confirm with your operator.

Courses covered? No. Neither SafetyWing nor Genki covers lessons or courses — your Open Water course is insured by the school, not by your travel policy.

✓ How this guide was checked

  • Prices and limits read on the official SafetyWing and Genki pages (Complete from $177.50/month for ages 18-39; Essential $62.72 per 4 weeks; Genki from €52/month) — DAN’s price is set on its own site and not quoted here.
  • Depth: we print what the wordings say. Neither insurer publishes a metre limit, so this page no longer prints “40 m” or “30 m” for any product.
  • Chamber and treatment prices are local orders of magnitude, not insurer figures. Written by Tommy Betts, updated 5 September 2026.

THE ESSENTIAL QUESTION

Do You Need Scuba Diving Insurance for Thailand?

Yes — because the two things that go wrong underwater are exactly the two things standard travel insurance handles worst: decompression sickness, which needs a hyperbaric chamber (three facilities are documented on this page for the whole of Thailand), and evacuation from an island or a liveaboard to that chamber. Thailand is one of the world’s top diving destinations, with affordable certification courses and sites from Koh Tao to Richelieu Rock. (For general cover, see our complete travel insurance guide.)

Here is the uncomfortable truth: most standard travel policies exclude scuba diving outright or limit it to depths that do not match real recreational dives. The two travel medical plans we can verify — SafetyWing (with Adventure Sports) and Genki — do cover diving, but on conditions written in their wordings, not on a metre figure printed on a comparison site.

Common Diving Risks in Thailand

Decompression sickness (DCS) — the “bends” can occur even when you follow your computer. Symptoms range from joint pain to paralysis; treatment is a hyperbaric chamber, often several sessions.

Arterial gas embolism (AGE) — air bubbles entering the bloodstream, usually after a rapid ascent. A medical emergency needing immediate treatment.

Barotrauma — pressure injuries to ears, sinuses or lungs. Common among new divers who do not equalise properly — the typical Koh Tao incident.

Marine life injuries — jellyfish stings, lionfish spines, coral cuts. Usually minor, sometimes a severe allergic reaction.

Equipment malfunction — regulator failure, BCD problems, tank issues. Even with rental checks, malfunctions happen.

💡 The bottom line. A chamber session is an order of magnitude of $1,500–5,000 and DCS rarely needs just one. The plans on this page start at €52/month (Genki) or $177.50/month (SafetyWing Complete); DAN is an annual membership priced on its site. Never dive in Thailand without a policy whose diving clause you have actually read.

THE FINE PRINT

What Standard Travel Insurance Excludes for Divers

Most travellers assume their travel insurance covers scuba diving. In reality, diving is often excluded or limited by clauses like these:

Common exclusions in standard policies:

  • ❌ “Scuba diving below 10 metres / 30 feet”
  • ❌ “Diving without a certified instructor present”
  • ❌ “Technical or decompression diving”
  • ❌ “Diving without valid certification”
  • ❌ “Hyperbaric / recompression treatment”
  • ❌ “Solo diving”

An Open Water certification trains you to 18 m; Advanced Open Water to 30 m; many Thai fun dives run 20-30 m. If your policy caps at 10 m, or excludes chambers, you are uninsured for almost every real dive you will do here. Read the exclusions list before the benefits table.

THE PLANS WE CAN VERIFY

SafetyWing, Genki or DAN: Which Covers Diving in Thailand?

Two travel medical plans cover diving on conditions we can read on their official pages, and one dive-accident membership adds specialist support on top. Ordered by what most visiting divers need: general medical cover first, dive-specific expertise second.

🥇 TRAVEL MEDICAL + DIVING

SafetyWing Complete

from $177.50

per month, ages 18-39 (official rate) • Essential $62.72 per 4 weeks + paid Adventure Sports add-on

SafetyWing covers diving through its Adventure Sports cover: included in Complete, available as a paid add-on on Essential (priced in the calculator). Adventure Sports carries a $100,000 lifetime cap and never covers courses, organised competition or professional diving. Depth: per the policy wording.

  • ✔ Complete: $1,500,000 medical, Adventure Sports included
  • ✔ Essential: $62.72 per 4 weeks + Adventure Sports add-on (paid)
  • ✔ Adventure Sports cap: $100,000 lifetime
  • ✔ $0 deductible outside the US • buy while abroad • cancel anytime
  • ✔ Complete: sign up until age 64
  • ⚠ Depth and dive conditions: per the policy wording
  • ✘ Courses and lessons never covered (the school insures you)

Which SafetyWing plan for a dive trip? If you only need medical cover for a few weeks, Essential plus the Adventure Sports add-on is the cheaper route; Complete is the long-stay health plan with the add-on built in. Either way, write to SafetyWing with your certification and planned depth before you go.

Depth and activity conditions are in the policy wording, not on the sales page.

  • ✔ €1,000,000 medical per person
  • ✔ Diving listed among included sports (conditions per the wording)
  • ✔ €50 deductible per case (€0 when hospitalised)
  • ✔ Guarantee of payment to the hospital possible

➕ DIVE-ACCIDENT COVER ON TOP

DAN Europe

Price on the DAN site

annual membership plans — set by DAN Europe, not quoted by us

DAN Europe (Divers Alert Network) is the reference for dive accidents: a hotline staffed by dive physicians, chamber referrals and evacuation organised for diving injuries. It is a membership with a dive-accident plan attached, and it is deliberately narrow: it does not pay for the dengue you catch on Koh Tao, the scooter crash on the way to the dive shop or a cancelled liveaboard.

  • ✔ 24/7 hotline with dive-medicine specialists
  • ✔ Hyperbaric treatment and dive-specific evacuation
  • ✔ Plans for recreational and technical diving (per the plan chosen)
  • ✔ Worldwide
  • ✘ Dive injuries only — not travel insurance
  • ✘ Depth and renewal terms set on DAN’s site (not verified by us)

When to add DAN: liveaboards, Richelieu Rock, the Similans, any itinerary hours from a chamber — and any diver who wants a dive physician on the phone at 2 a.m. Tell each insurer the other exists so the two assistance teams coordinate.

THE ONE RULE

What Depth and Which Activities Are Covered?

This is where comparison sites invent numbers. Dive forums repeat metre limits with great confidence; we print what the official product pages say and nothing else.

VERIFIED POSITION

Depth per the policy wording — neither SafetyWing nor Genki publishes a metre limit; ask in writing before a deep or liveaboard trip.

SafetyWing covers diving through its Adventure Sports cover, Genki through its sports inclusion — both on conditions written in the policy wording. Your certification sets your training ceiling (Open Water 18 m, Advanced 30 m, Deep 40 m); the insurer’s answer sets your insured ceiling. Get that answer in writing before a deep or liveaboard trip — an email is evidence at claim time.

Certification levels and what to ask

Your certification determines the depths you are trained for. For each level, here is the question to put to the insurer:

🔰 Discover Scuba / try dive (no certification)

Introductory dives with an instructor, usually within 12 m. Ask: “Is an uncertified introductory dive under instructor supervision covered?” Remember that a course itself is never covered — the school’s insurance applies.

🎓 Open Water Diver (PADI/SSI)

Trained to 18 m — the most common level. Ask: “Is recreational diving within my certification depth covered, and is hyperbaric treatment a covered medical expense?”

🌟 Advanced Open Water

Trained to 30 m — needed for most Thai sites beyond the shallow reefs. Ask: “Does the diving clause apply at 30 m with a buddy and a certified guide?”

🏆 Deep Diver / Rescue Diver

Trained to 40 m. Ask specifically about your planned maximum depth and about liveaboards far from a chamber. This is where DAN on top earns its price.

⚡ Technical diver

Decompression diving, trimix, rebreathers: outside the sports inclusion of both travel plans. DAN Europe offers technical plans — check the plan terms on its site.

Activities around the dive trip

ActivitySafetyWingGenki
Recreational diving within certificationAdventure Sports cover (Complete / paid add-on on Essential), per the wordingsports inclusion, per the wording
Diving course / lessons❌ never covered❌ never covered
Snorkelling, kayaking, swimming✅ ordinary leisure✅ ordinary leisure
Liveaboard (remote sites)medical per the wording; ask about evacuation from seamedical per the wording; ask about evacuation from sea
Scooter to the dive shopvalid motorcycle licence + helmet requiredconditions in the policy wording — see the mistakes section below
Organised competition / professional diving

Hyperbaric treatment is a medical expense under both plans when the dive itself is covered — the exclusions list, not the benefits table, decides.

✉ How to ask. One email, before you travel: “I am [certification], planning recreational dives to [depth] m at [sites] with a certified guide, [dates]. Please confirm in writing that diving to this depth and any hyperbaric treatment are covered under my plan.” Keep the reply with your policy documents.

THE BUDGET

What Does Diving Insurance for Thailand Cost?

Three products, three units: SafetyWing bills per month (Complete) or per 4-week cycle (Essential), Genki per month, DAN per year. Official rates read on 5 September 2026:

What a diving accident costs without insurance

Local orders of magnitude for 2026, collected from private facilities and assistance practice — the hospital sets the bill, not this page.

ItemOrder of magnitude (2026)
One hyperbaric chamber session (private facility)$1,500–5,000
Typical DCS course of treatmentseveral sessions — multiply accordingly
Hospital stay and specialist follow-upper the hospital and length of stay
Evacuation island → chamber (boat, road or air)priced by aircraft and distance — per the assistance company
International medevac (if needed)per the assistance company

For hospital price levels in Thailand, see our healthcare costs without insurance guide. Private hospitals ask for a deposit or a guarantee of payment before admission.

💰 Put in perspective: one chamber session can cost more than a year of Genki or a season of SafetyWing Essential. The evacuation is the part travellers underestimate — on a liveaboard you are hours from the nearest facility.

EMERGENCY INFORMATION

Hyperbaric Chambers in Thailand: Where and How Much

Three facilities we can document treat diving emergencies. Their current phone numbers are not verified by us — confirm the contact with your dive centre or your assistance line before the trip, and save it with your policy number.

🏥 Bangkok — Naval Medical Department

Thailand’s largest hyperbaric facility, run by the Royal Thai Navy. Reference centre for serious cases evacuated from the islands.

📍 Thonburi, Bangkok

🏥 Sattahip / Pattaya — Apakorn Kiatiwong Naval Hospital

Royal Thai Navy facility serving the Gulf of Thailand and the Pattaya wrecks. Dive-medicine specialists.

📍 Sattahip, Chonburi

🏥 Phuket — SSS Network Hyperbaric

Private facility serving Andaman Sea divers (Phi Phi, Similans, Richelieu). Works with DAN and major assistance companies.

📍 Phuket Town

ℹ Koh Samui and Koh Tao. Dive centres in the Gulf refer divers to a chamber facility on Koh Samui. It is not in our verified list, so this page does not count it — ask your operator which facility they use and how you would get there.

🚨 Emergency numbers. Thai ambulance: 1669. Tourist Police (English): 1155. DAN members: call the DAN Europe emergency number printed on your DAN card — it is staffed by dive physicians 24/7. SafetyWing and Genki policyholders: the assistance number is in your policy documents and app. Call before treatment if you can; the assistance arranges the guarantee of payment.

STEP BY STEP

What to Do After a Diving Accident in Thailand

Speed matters with dive injuries — do not delay treatment to sort out insurance first. Here is the order that works.

1

Get out of the water and onto oxygen. Any competent dive centre carries oxygen. Tell the crew you suspect DCS; they know the nearest chamber.

2

Call the assistance line before or on arrival at the hospital. DAN members: the DAN Europe number on your card. SafetyWing and Genki: the number in your documents. The assistance issues the guarantee of payment (GoP) the private hospital will ask for.

3

Do not fly. Cabin pressure at altitude worsens DCS. Standard advice is no flying for 24-48 hours after normal diving; after a suspected DCS incident, no flight until a dive physician clears you. Evacuation to a chamber goes by boat, road or low-altitude air ambulance — organised by the assistance, not by you.

4

Document everything. Receipts, medical reports (ask for English copies), dive log and dive-computer profile. Photograph injuries.

5

File the claim. Online portal or app for all three products. Keep the insurer’s written confirmation of diving cover with the file.

DCS symptoms to watch for

Joint pain (especially shoulders and elbows), skin rash or mottling, extreme fatigue, dizziness, numbness or tingling, difficulty breathing, confusion. Symptoms can appear up to 24 hours after diving. If in doubt, oxygen and a call to the assistance — do not “wait and see”, and do not board a plane.

⚠️ Common claim denials: diving deeper than your certification or than the insurer confirmed, diving without valid certification, alcohol or drugs (claims linked to intoxication are excluded under standard policy terms), solo diving where a buddy is required, and course dives claimed on a travel policy. Know your wording before you dive.

WHERE TO DIVE

Thailand Dive Sites and Seasons: Depth and Nearest Chamber

World-class diving from the Andaman Sea to the Gulf of Thailand. Typical depths below are dive-centre ranges, not insurance limits — your insured depth is whatever the insurer confirmed in writing.

🏝️ Similan Islands

Andaman Sea | Season: Nov–May

Crystal visibility, manta rays and granite boulders. Liveaboard diving is the norm — hours from any facility.

  • Typical depth: 15–30 m
  • Min. certification: Advanced Open Water
  • Nearest documented chamber: Phuket (several hours by boat)

🦈 Richelieu Rock

Andaman Sea | Season: Nov–May

Thailand’s most famous site: whale sharks, mantas, soft-coral pinnacles. Remote — the case for adding DAN.

  • Typical depth: 5–35 m
  • Min. certification: Advanced Open Water
  • Nearest documented chamber: Phuket (5 h+)

🎓 Koh Tao

Gulf of Thailand | Year-round

The certification capital. Most incidents here are beginner incidents: barotrauma and rapid ascents. Your course is insured by the school.

  • Typical depth: 10–25 m
  • Min. certification: Beginner OK
  • Nearest documented chamber: Sattahip / Bangkok; dive centres refer to a Koh Samui facility (not verified by us)

🐋 Sail Rock

Gulf of Thailand | Year-round

The Gulf’s best site: whale sharks, the chimney swim-through, schooling fish. Deep sections for Advanced divers.

  • Typical depth: 15–30 m
  • Min. certification: Open Water (Advanced for the deep sections)
  • Nearest documented chamber: Sattahip / Bangkok; Koh Samui facility per dive centres (not verified by us)

🐠 Phi Phi Islands

Andaman Sea | Year-round

Accessible diving with leopard sharks and easy conditions. Day trips from Phuket or Krabi.

  • Typical depth: 10–24 m
  • Min. certification: Open Water
  • Nearest documented chamber: Phuket (1.5 h)

⚓ Pattaya Wrecks

Gulf of Thailand | Year-round

HTMS Khram, the Hardeep wreck and artificial reefs, close to Bangkok. Wreck penetration needs the right training.

  • Typical depth: 18–30 m
  • Min. certification: Advanced Open Water for the wrecks
  • Nearest documented chamber: Sattahip (30 min) — the best chamber access in Thailand

💡 Insurance tip by site. Koh Tao and Phi Phi: a travel plan whose diving clause you have read is usually adequate. Similans, Richelieu Rock and any liveaboard: travel plan plus DAN, and ask both about evacuation from sea before you book.

AVOID THESE

Mistakes Divers Make With Insurance in Thailand

Believing a metre figure read on a comparison site

No metre limit is published by SafetyWing or Genki. The only figure that counts is the one the insurer wrote to you.

Buying SafetyWing Essential without the Adventure Sports add-on

Essential alone excludes diving. Add the paid add-on or take Complete, and keep the confirmation.

Claiming a course dive on a travel policy

Courses and lessons are never covered by either travel plan; the school’s insurance applies. Read the waiver you sign.

Treating DAN as travel insurance

DAN pays for dive accidents only. Pair it with a travel medical plan — and tell each about the other.

Flying home the day after a deep dive

Observe no-fly times, and after any suspected DCS do not fly until a dive physician clears you.

Renting a scooter to reach the dive shop without checking the wording

The most common claim denial in Thailand has nothing to do with water. SafetyWing: valid motorcycle licence and helmet required. Genki: motor vehicle use covered with conditions — check the policy wording. See our motorbike insurance guide.

Buying after the incident

Genki bought abroad has a 14-day waiting period; nothing covers an accident that already happened. Buy before your first dive.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my regular travel insurance cover scuba diving in Thailand?

Usually not adequately. Most standard policies exclude diving outright or cap it at 10-18 m, and some exclude hyperbaric treatment. The two travel medical plans we can verify — SafetyWing (Complete, or Essential with the Adventure Sports add-on) and Genki Traveler — cover diving on conditions in their policy wordings. Read the exclusions list before you dive.

What depth does SafetyWing or Genki cover for diving?

Neither publishes a metre limit. SafetyWing covers diving through its Adventure Sports cover, Genki through its sports inclusion, both “per the policy wording”. Ask the insurer in writing whether your certification depth is covered before a deep or liveaboard trip, and keep the answer with your documents.

Do I need dive insurance for a discover scuba dive or try dive?

Yes, and check two things: that an uncertified introductory dive under instructor supervision is covered by your plan, and that the school’s own insurance is real — a course or lesson is never covered by SafetyWing or Genki. DAN adds specialist dive-medicine support at any depth.

What’s the difference between DAN and travel insurance for diving?

DAN Europe is a dive-accident membership: hyperbaric treatment, dive physicians on the phone, dive-specific evacuation. It does not cover non-diving illness, trip cancellation or belongings. SafetyWing and Genki are travel medical plans that include diving on conditions. Serious divers carry both and tell each insurer the other exists.

Can I buy dive insurance after arriving in Thailand?

Yes. DAN membership is bought online any time. Genki can be bought abroad with a 14-day waiting period if you had no prior cover. SafetyWing can be bought while already travelling. Nothing covers an incident that has already happened — buy before your first dive.

How much does hyperbaric chamber treatment cost in Thailand?

A single session at a private facility is an order of magnitude of $1,500–5,000 (2026), and DCS usually needs several sessions; add the hospital stay and the evacuation from the island, which is priced by aircraft and distance. The hospital sets the bill — see our healthcare costs guide.

Does the dive shop’s insurance cover me?

The shop’s liability insurance protects the shop, not your medical bills. Some centres offer a basic accident cover; it is usually minimal and will not pay for a full DCS treatment. Carry your own policy — and note that during a course, the school’s insurance is the one that applies.

Can I fly after a diving accident?

No. Reduced cabin pressure worsens DCS and can be fatal. Standard advice is no flying for 24-48 hours after normal diving; after a suspected DCS incident, do not fly until a dive physician clears you. Evacuation to a chamber is organised by the assistance, by boat, road or low-altitude air ambulance.

What’s the best insurance for a liveaboard dive trip?

For remote sites like Richelieu Rock or the Similans: a travel medical plan whose diving clause you have confirmed in writing (SafetyWing Complete or Genki Traveler) plus DAN Europe for dive-specific emergencies and its 24/7 hotline. Ask both how evacuation from sea is handled before you book.

Does dive insurance cover equipment damage or loss?

Genki is medical-only — no equipment or baggage cover. SafetyWing Essential includes baggage cover with limits per the policy wording; expensive cameras and computers usually exceed per-item limits. DAN offers equipment cover as an option on some plans — check on its site.
